Majmu' Fatawa Ibn Baz

Volume 10, Kitab at-Tahara, Bab Nawaqidh al-Wudu

The correct scholarly view is that eating camel meat nullifies wudu (ablution). This position is based on clear, authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and is the established view of the Hanbali madhhab, which is favored by many contemporary Salafi scholars, including Shaykh Ibn Baz.

The primary evidence for this is the hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah, who said that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "Should I perform wudu after eating camel meat?" He said, "Yes." The man then asked, "Should I perform wudu after eating mutton?" He replied, "If you wish." (Sahih Muslim).

Similarly, it is narrated from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform wudu after eating camel meat, and do not perform wudu after eating mutton." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 81; Sunan Abi Dawud, 184; authenticated by Imam Ahmad and others).

Based on this direct command, it is obligatory (wajib) to renew one's ablution after consuming camel meat, regardless of the amount eaten or whether it was cooked or raw. This ruling is specific to camel meat (lahm). Other parts, such as the milk, broth (maraq), or fat, do not break wudu according to Shaykh Ibn Baz, as the texts specifically mention "meat."

While some scholars and other schools of thought do not hold this view, Shaykh Ibn Baz and the Permanent Committee emphasize that when authentic evidence is found, it must be followed over any other opinion. Therefore, whoever eats camel meat and wishes to pray or perform another act of worship that requires purity must perform a new wudu.
