About the Islamic (Hijri) Calendar

The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used by Muslims worldwide to determine important dates such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Hajj pilgrimage. The calendar was introduced by the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and begins from the Hijrah — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.

Unlike the Gregorian (solar) calendar, the Hijri year is approximately 11 days shorter, which means Islamic dates shift each year relative to the Gregorian calendar. This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar system for approximate calculations.
