— Abu Dharr & Mu‘ādh (RA) (Tirmidhi)
nawawiDay.commentary
Three pillars: taqwā in private, tawbah after slipping, akhlāq with people.
nawawiDay.extendedExplanation
Mu‘ādh and Abū Dharr (RA) received this comprehensive advice. Three pillars: (1) taqwā wherever you are — with people and alone; (2) erase sins by following them with good deeds; (3) treat people with good character.
Ibn Rajab notes the order is precise: taqwā is the relationship with Allah, tawbah-via-good-deeds is the recovery mechanism, and akhlāq is the relationship with creation. The middle clause is the bridge: it acknowledges that the believer will slip — and gives him an immediate antidote.
nawawiDay.fromScholars
"Hasanāt erase sayyi’āt according to the strength of the good deed and the sincerity of the doer — istighfār, ṣadaqah, and ṣalāh are among the strongest erasers."
"The greatest of good character is patience with people’s harm and not harming them. This is harder than night-prayer for many."
nawawiDay.fiqhRulings
- •Major sins are not erased by ordinary good deeds alone — they require sincere tawbah (regret, leaving the sin, resolve not to return, and returning rights to the wronged).
- •Minor sins are erased by ṣalāh, fasting, ḥajj, wuḍū’, and good deeds (per Muslim — ‘the five prayers, Friday to Friday, Ramadan to Ramadan, are expiations…’).
- •Good character with people is part of taqwā — not separate from it.
