A statement or action of a Companion that is not traced back to the Prophet ﷺ. Some mawqūf reports take the ruling of marfū‘ (e.g. when a Companion speaks of the unseen, which has no scope for personal opinion).

From و-ق-ف (w-q-f), meaning 'to halt.' The chain 'stops' at the Companion.
