التعريف

Noble character — the Prophet ﷺ said: 'I was only sent to perfect noble character' (Aḥmad, ṣaḥīḥ). The heaviest thing in the believer's scales on the Day of Judgement.

الاشتقاق والجذر

From خ-ل-ق (kh-l-q), 'to create' — akhlāq are the inner forms (khulq) Allah has shaped in a person. Plural of khulq.

الاستخدام في القرآن

Of the Prophet ﷺ: 'And indeed you are upon a great character' (al-Qalam 68:4).

الاستخدام في السنة

'The most beloved of you to me and the closest to me in seating on the Day of Judgement are the best of you in akhlāq' (Tirmidhī, ḥasan). 'Nothing is heavier in the believer's scales on the Day of Judgement than good akhlāq' (Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī — ṣaḥīḥ).

ملاحظات علمية

Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that 'religion is entirely good character — whoever surpasses you in character has surpassed you in religion'. The Salaf ranked akhlāq alongside knowledge and worship as a pillar of true tarbiyah.

Audit your character regularly: how do you treat your spouse, parents, neighbours, employees? The Prophet ﷺ said the best Muslim is best to his family. Apologise quickly, smile often, restrain anger.
