التعريف
The body of all Muslims — bound by faith rather than nationality or ethnicity. The Prophet ﷺ described them as one body.
الاشتقاق والجذر
From أ-م-م (ʾ-m-m), 'to head toward' — an ummah is a community headed toward a shared aim or leader. Also used in the Qur'an for a single righteous individual (Ibrāhīm in 16:120) and for a span of time.
الاستخدام في القرآن
Allah says: 'You are the best ummah brought forth for mankind, enjoining good and forbidding evil' (Āl ʿImrān 3:110). Also: 'Thus We have made you a balanced ummah' (al-Baqarah 2:143).
الاستخدام في السنة
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion is like one body — when one limb suffers, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever' (Bukhārī, Muslim).
ملاحظات علمية
Scholars distinguish ummat ad-daʿwah (everyone the Prophet ﷺ was sent to — all of humanity) from ummat al-istijābah (those who answered the call — the Muslims).
التطبيق العملي
Care about the affairs of Muslims worldwide — make duʿāʾ for them, give in charity, do not rejoice at their hardship. Reject narrow nationalisms that fracture the body.
