Commentary

Excellence applies even to permitted necessities — including the slaughter of animals.

Extended Explanation

The principle of iḥsān — doing things in the most beautiful, complete, and merciful way — is universal. The Prophet ﷺ deliberately chose two contexts that humans might consider ‘beneath’ careful conduct (killing in legitimate war, slaughtering animals) precisely to show that iḥsān has no exceptions.

Ibn Daqīq al-‘Eid notes: if iḥsān is required even in slaughter — an unavoidable, lawful taking of life — then how much more so in worship, in trade, in raising children, in marriage, in friendship? The hadith universalises a quality across the entire human experience.

From the Scholars

"Iḥsān in slaughter is mentioned because it is something most people are heedless about. If even there it is required, what about everything else?"

Ibn Daqīq al-‘Eid · Sharḥ al-Arba‘īn

"Sharpening the blade — yuḥidd aḥadukum shafratahu — includes preparing well for any task. Cutting corners is the opposite of iḥsān."

Ibn ‘Uthaymīn

Fiqh & Rulings

  • Halal slaughter requires: a sharp blade, mention of Allah’s name, severing the windpipe, food-pipe, and at least one jugular vein.
  • Slaughtering one animal in front of another is forbidden — it contradicts iḥsān to the watching animal.
  • Iḥsān at work, in marriage, in parenting — all derive their obligation from the universal principle of this hadith.

Qur'ān Cross-References

16:90‘Indeed, Allah commands justice, iḥsān, and giving to relatives…’
55:60‘Is the reward for iḥsān anything but iḥsān?’

Today's Reflection

Where in your life have you settled for 'good enough' instead of iḥsān?

Key Benefits

  • 1Iḥsān is universal — in worship, work, and relationships.
  • 2Mercy to animals is part of iḥsān.

Common Mistakes & Warnings

  • ‘Killing in the best way’ refers to legitimate warfare under Islamic rules — not vigilante or unlawful killing, which is forbidden absolutely.
  • Industrial mass slaughter that violates iḥsān (e.g., conscious animals, dull blades) raises serious questions about the meat’s desirability even if technically halal.
