    What is Ramadan?

    Ramadan is the special month when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. It's the month Allah gave us the Quran!

    Why do we fast?

    Fasting helps us feel grateful for our food, remember the poor, and grow closer to Allah.

    How long is Ramadan?

    Ramadan is 29 or 30 days — depending on when we see the new moon. Then it's Eid!

    Eat Suhoor

    Wake up before Fajr and eat a meal called Suhoor. The Prophet ﷺ said there is blessing in Suhoor.

    Open fast with dates

    When the sun sets, break your fast with dates and water — just like the Prophet ﷺ did.

    Dua at Iftar

    Right when you break your fast, say: 'Dhahaba-dh-dhama-u wabtallatil-'urooqu wa thabatal-ajru inshaa Allah.'

    What breaks the fast?

    Eating, drinking on purpose, or being unwell can break the fast. Forgetting and eating? Allah has fed you — keep going!

    Who doesn't have to fast?

    Little kids, sick people, travelers, very old people, and mums who are pregnant or nursing — Allah is so kind.

    Gates of Jannah Open

    In Ramadan, the gates of Jannah open, the gates of the Fire close, and the chained-up devils can't bother us as much!

    Pray Taraweeh

    After Isha prayer, Muslims pray extra prayers called Taraweeh and listen to the Quran.

    One special night in the last 10 days of Ramadan is better than 1,000 months! Look for it on the odd nights.

    Say: 'Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'annee' — O Allah, You love to forgive, so forgive me!

    I'tikaf

    Some Muslims stay in the masjid for the last 10 days of Ramadan — only worshipping Allah. The Prophet ﷺ did this every year.

    Before Eid, every Muslim gives food to those in need so everyone can celebrate.

    Eid Takbeer

    On the way to Eid prayer, we say loudly: 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd.'

    After Ramadan, we celebrate Eid! We pray a special prayer, wear nice clothes, and visit family.

    Eid Prayer Steps

    Eid prayer is two rak'ahs with extra takbeers, followed by a khutbah — outside or in the masjid.

    Two Eids a Year

    Muslims have two Eids: Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha during Hajj when we remember Ibrahim ﷺ.

    Six Days of Shawwal

    Whoever fasts Ramadan and then six days of Shawwal is rewarded as if they fasted the whole year!
