Definition

Everything authentically transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in word, action, or tacit approval. The Sunnah explains the Qur'an and is the second source of legislation. In creedal usage, 'as-Sunnah' also refers to the entire methodology of Ahl us-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah.

Pronunciation: SUN-nah

Etymology & Root

From the root س-ن-ن (s-n-n), meaning 'a way, a path.' Sunnah is a trodden path — that which is followed.

Usage in the Qur'an

'Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it.' (al-Ḥashr 59:7) — establishing the binding authority of the Sunnah.

Scholarly Notes

Classical works titled 'as-Sunnah' (e.g. by ‘Abdullāh b. Aḥmad, al-Khallāl, al-Lālakā'ī) deal primarily with creed — using 'Sunnah' to mean the entire prophetic and Salafī way against innovation.

Practical Application

Revive a Sunnah daily — siwāk, the morning and evening adhkār, sleeping on the right side, eating with three fingers — and you revive the religion in your life.
