— ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (RA) (Muslim)

الشرح

Called 'the Mother of the Sunnah' — it summarises the entire religion in three levels: Islam (outward acts), Imān (inward belief), Ihsān (perfection). Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen built entire courses around it.

شرح موسّع

Known as ‘Umm as-Sunnah’ (the Mother of the Sunnah), this hadith is unique in that the Prophet ﷺ called the encounter ‘Jibrīl came to teach you your religion.’ The structure he used — Islam, then Imān, then Iḥsān — is the classical framework every student of knowledge memorises.

Islam covers the five outward pillars: shahādah, ṣalāh, zakāh, ṣawm, ḥajj. Imān covers the six inward articles: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and qadr — its good and its evil. Iḥsān is the perfection of both: ‘to worship Allah as if you see Him; for though you do not see Him, He sees you.’

Ibn Rajab observes that this division proves the famous principle: the religion has both ẓāhir (outward) and bāṭin (inward) — and to neglect either is to misunderstand Islam itself.

من كلام أهل العلم

"Iḥsān has two stations: the station of muqābalah — that you worship Allah as if you see Him; and the station of murāqabah — knowing that He sees you. The first is higher."

Ibn ‘Uthaymīn

"If you cannot reach the station of as if you see Him, then settle in the station of knowing He sees you — and this is the minimum required for iḥsān."

Ibn Rajab · Jāmi‘ al-‘Ulūm wa al-Ḥikam

الفقه والأحكام

  • The six pillars of Imān are an article of ‘aqīdah — denying any one of them takes a person out of Islam.
  • Belief in qadr includes its four levels: Allah's knowledge, His writing, His will, and His creation.
  • Asking about the religion in a clear, organised way is from the Sunnah — Jibrīl modelled it.
  • Saying ‘Allah and His Messenger know best’ when you do not know is the proper adab.

الصلة بآيات القرآن

2:177The verse of birr lists the articles of imān almost identically.
4:136‘O you who believe, believe in Allah and His Messenger…’ — the command to believe in all six articles.

  • Belief in qadr does not mean fatalism: ‘work, for each is facilitated to what he was created for.’
