‘Umrah

التعريف

A pilgrimage involving iḥrām, ṭawāf around the Ka‘bah, sa‘y between Ṣafā and Marwah, and shaving or shortening the hair. Highly recommended; the strongest position is that it is not obligatory.

From ع-م-ر (‘-m-r), meaning 'to visit' or 'to populate.' ‘Umrah is the visit to the Sacred House.

الاستخدام في السنة

'‘Umrah to ‘Umrah is an expiation for what is between them, and the accepted ḥajj has no reward but Paradise.' (Bukhārī 1773)

التطبيق العملي

‘Umrah in Ramaḍān equals a ḥajj in reward, as in the authentic ḥadīth — though it does not discharge the obligation of ḥajj itself.
